Photos, and more photos

Since it looks like we're nearly back into the world of reliable, strong Internet connections, we are putting a few photos up, with commentary to ensue, to catch up for a couple of days. Enjoy!

K: The drive through the Outback has been quite interesting. Accommodations have been, for the most part, Australian motor lodges that serve the "self-caterers." Let's just say that I am really not a self-caterer type of girl. Viggo keeps telling me that the lodges are "retro chic", and I keep saying "give me a Best Western or Hampton Inn!" I realize that we are in the very rural part of Australia, but the decor so far has been solid 1973! Chuck Soldano, Interior Designer to the stars, there is a whole business begging for you here.

The scenery and wildlife have been the best part of the drive. The terrain is rugged and rocky in parts and then more desolate and arid in other parts. We have seen (dead and alive) wallabies, emus, various lizards and all sorts of birds. Not sure how many lizards Viggo has squashed with the car, but it has been several.

V: Wow, this is quite the epic drive from Darwin south, through the heart of Australia. Lots of scenery that is very reminiscent of the American West and Southwest. Global population problem? There's plenty of room for bodies in the Outback!

Yes, had to stop at Australia's version of Roswell, New Mexico, Wycliffe Well. Karen said it best when she stated, "Well, they live out here in the sticks, have nothing to do but drink, so they are going to be imagining that they see things!" The roadhouse/cafe/gas station there had every wall plastered with clippings on UFO sightings there, and throughout Australia.
I want to believe, please, beam me up!!!!!!!!!

Cute Wallabies in Alice Springs were, for better or worse, accustomed to human handfeeding.

Next stop: Uluru, aka Ayers Rock, in the heart of the Red Centre!

  2. Oh, Mike, it is so impressive to see the ancient, weathered Aboriginal cave paintings, and the designs etched on boomerangs, and to learn of their world creation stories via the artworks.
