K: The Barossa Valley is just beautiful with the contrast of the green grapevines and the yellow grass of summertime on the rolling hills. Barossa is the land of Shiraz, and we tasted some great wine from some well-known and lesser-known vineyards. Surprisingly, Reisling is becoming a popular choice in this area, and it is far superior to any of the Australian Chardonnay we have tasted. We had a great time tasting at the Two Hands vineyard and a case should be awaiting our return to the US.
V: Beautiful rolling hills and the vineyards all around give the Barossa Valley a very definite 'Napa' feel. We had quite a few good wines, and a superb dinner at a wonderful restaurant named Appellation, attached to the poshest lodgings in the valley. The menu is detailed below.
We bicycled to three wineries for some tastings, in the process getting some great exercise amid the hills and heat, and were most impressed with the Two Hands Vineyard. So, some of their tasty offerings are heading to Philly! Yum yum.
And, at last, some nice craft brews at the Barossa Brewing company, which is basically a weekend hobby business for a couple. Honestly, I've crafted and brewed beers just as good as theirs ... hmmm... maybe there is a job Down Under for me!
Highlights: Bites: Appellation restaurant menu was delicious and immaculately presented:
Spiced broth of South Australian prawns in coconut milk and lime
Ham and parsley terrine with mustard dressing and caperberry salad
Duck three ways: mallee wood-smoked breast, liver parfait, and rillettes
Creamy risotto of fine barley with Tuscan black cabbage and two cheeses
Shu Am pork with cumin-spiced summer vegetables and chickpeas
Riesling and Shiraz wines
